Deerfield, KS

I intended to stop for the night in Holcomb where the Clutter murders occurred, made famous in In Cold Blood, but Holcomb has an ordinance that prohibits visible tents. So I pushed on here to Dearfield, 9 miles closer to Colorado. Tomorrow night, Colorado!

Today was a good ride into a slight wind but under a cool, blue sky. I had some great stops at farmer co ops, where you can get cold water from water coolers and talk to locals. I've learned a lot about plains farming: the wheat harvest is in a couple of weeks, then corn is planted, and finally after the corn harvest comes soy and milo season. Harvest ends november, at which time all these grain elevators will be full to the brim.

Hey R, my mom is sitting in your chair. We had crispy spinach today at Sophia. Have fun over those Colorado mountains!
