Council Grove, KS

It's a beautiful Saturday Morning here in Council Grove where I'm sitting outside the Hay's house, the oldest continuously operating reatuarant west of the Mississippi. The 17 miles here from Allen were easy, even with the hills, which yesterday forced me to stop in Allen, where I met good fortune.

Yesterday was not the best day of the trek. Struggling up a hill to Osage I had stopped to rest. An elderly man, KC, stopped in his truck to give me a ride. In Osage, I jumped out, got my bike, and KC drove off. With my helmet! Osage is small with nowhere to buy a helmet. So I sat beside a Casey's hoping KC WOULD drive by and sure enough he did. I had retreived my helmet.

I was hoping then to mqake it to Council Grove but hill after hill convinced me to stop in Allen. A small small town but with a post office. A lady was leaving. I asked her she was the postmaster and if she knew where I could pitch a tent. She offered me a room in her and her husvand's house.

Janet and Guy Hirt are kind and generous people. Guy served me beers while Janet cooked steak on an outdoor fire. I showered, ate, had great company, and slept well.

Thus the beautiful ride this morning. Kansas is good
